I was listening to some teenagers moaning on the bus the other day and one said that they wished that they were “as free as a bird or something”.
Hardly a new sentiment, but it is something of a misconception, for what animals are truly free? A lot are not even free to roam these days, but they are not free from predators and they are certainly not free from the daily grind of finding sufficient food to survive, expecially if they are one of those that needs to consume several times its own body weight each day just to survive.
Of the millions of species of life form that inhabit this planet, humans are possibly more free than most, and I would not swap my daily grind for that of any other living thing.
